Change is, once again, in the air as Summer begins to wind down. The lazy, languid days will slow to a trickle as the distant sound of rushing, shifting tides grows louder. Fall is just a stone’s throw away, and while we have this wonderful window of opportunity, we must seize it and act promptly!
Late Summer provides ideal conditions to seed our lawns. More specifically, seeding should be done between mid-August through mid-September as day time temperatures grow milder with cooler nights, increasing moisture is available, and there is less competition from weed seed germination. Seeding now allows for strong root development before the heat of next summer. Reach out to Sweeney’s now!
Use this same window to transplant and divide Spring & Summer flowering perennials. Plants generally need to be divided when flower production is reduced, and the flowers themselves appear to be getting smaller. Additionally, if you notice the center of the plant is dying, leaving a gaping hole with most growth around the edges, it’s time to divide. Plants that have flopped over or require staking are also good candidates for dividing. Consider transplanting struggling plants to an area that has more sun or less sun, depending on the plant’s requirements. Adjustments made now will pay off big come next Spring and Summer.
Lastly, now is the time to order Spring-flowering bulbs. The bulbs will be planted in Fall, but orders must be placed now. Don’t delay! Reach out to Sweeney’s today.
Take advantage of this window of opportunity before it closes again for another year. Much can be accomplished now for a beautiful and healthy landscape come next Spring.
“Whilst August yet wears her golden crown,
Ripening fields lush – bright with promise;
Summer waxes long, then wanes quietly passing
Her fading green glory on to riotous Autumn.”
